The Tamil Nadu Government is likely to look at a procurement policy to buy its technical textile requirements from local industries.
The State’s textile strategy is likely to include the procurement policy, according to Dharmendra Pratap Yadav, secretary of the Department of Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi, who made this statement on Friday. A portion of the technical textile items produced in the State may be either brand-new or a replacement for an item that the State Government departments currently utilise.
The Department of Textiles and Handlooms is also investigating methods for funding technical textile research and development carried out by academic institutions independently and through industry-academia partnerships.
Technical textiles should be produced by textile businesses in Coimbatore and Tiruppur that specialise in cotton-based goods, says M. Vallalar, the Textiles Commissioner for Tamil Nadu.
The state’s goal of a US $ 1 trillion economy should also benefit the textile and handloom industries, according to K. Vivekanandan, Commissioner of Handlooms. The Department is currently participating in all institutions that provide engineering or textile technology courses in order to help the industry’s expansion.
When the companies in Tamil Nadu begin producing technical textiles, they will exceed states like Maharashtra and Gujarat, according to Arindam Basu, director general of the Northern India Textile Research Association.
In India, the use of technology textiles is 20 per cent, while in wealthy nations, it ranges from 30 per cent to 60 per cent. Furthermore, India’s technological textile industry is expanding at a rate of 10 per cent annually, compared to 4 per cent for the country’s conventional textile industry. Thus, he claimed, it provides enormous possibilities.
Though states like Maharashtra and Gujarat are now leading, Prakash Vasudevan, Director of the South India Textile Research Association, predicted that Tamil Nadu would soon experience a spike in the production of technical textile products.
