Biomaterials technology company MycoWorks has unveiled the official launch date for its first commercial-scale fine mycelium production plant.
MycoWorks intends to begin operations on 20th September 2023 in its 136,000-square-foot plant with more than 350 people in an effort to meet the demands of its partners for its high-end Reishi leather substitute material.
According to the manufacturer, Reishi is a brand-new kind of high-end, natural material with no environmental impact but the strength, durability, and feel of the ‘finest’ animal leathers.
It further claims that test results have been made public to show how the material can function to luxury levels without the usage of plastics.
Mycelium is grown in a controlled atmosphere as part of the fine mycelium manufacturing process used by MycoWorks to produce Reishi sheets.
Mycoworks clarifies major businesses in the premium apparel, home furnishings, and automobile sectors, such as Hermès, Ligne Roset, and GM, have already partnered with Reishi.
MycoWorks CEO Matt Scullin points out, “There have been two barriers to the decades-long search for a luxury leather alternative: product quality and scalable manufacturing.”
