The Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Power Division jointly organised a workshop at the Power Division in Dhaka on Monday, said a press release to enhance nationwide power grid frequency.
Habibur Rahman, senior secretary of the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources’ Power Division; Mahbubur Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Power Development Board; and Ichiguchi Tomohide, chief representative of JICA’s Bangladesh office, were among the government and development partner officials who attended the workshop.
During the workshop, Ichiguchi Tomohide, stated, ‘Reliable and quality power is vital to attracting foreign and domestic investors to expand their businesses in Bangladesh. Hence, power stability is crucial for rapid industrialisation and sustaining a high economic growth for the country.’
To minimise blackouts and enhance grid stability, JICA carried out research in the wake of the 4th October 2022, nationwide blackout incident and grid failure.
The JICA study team presented their findings and suggested several short-, mid-, and long-term corrective actions to enhance power quality in the report.
The report also suggests several other medium- and long-term initiatives, including the National Load Dispatch Center’s upgrade and the authorities’ capacity building.
Bangladesh’s electricity grid must be ready right away for more advanced power sources, such as the nuclear power plant at Rooppur, which is expected to release 2400 MW of power into the national grid over the next few years.
According to the Integrated Energy and Power Master Plan, a large number of grid-and household-level renewable energy sources are also expected, further adding to the complexity.
At the workshop, participants discussed these issues, their proposed solutions, as mentioned in the report, and their practical implications.
