The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has urged international apparel brands to invest in sustainability not just as buyers but as real partners. The call came during a multi-stakeholder working group meeting organised by the German Development Agency (GIZ) and Solidaridad Network Asia in Dhaka.
The meeting, held on 18th August, brought together representatives from garment factories, international brands, donors and service providers to develop a common climate action plan for the Bangladesh garment industry and future steps to combat climate change.
BGMEA Vice President Vidya Amrit Khan and Director Sheikh Hossain Muhammad Mustafiz attended the event on behalf of the association. Khan shared insights on the sector’s sustainable future, while Mustafiz outlined BGMEA’s ongoing initiatives to address climate change.
BGMEA reiterated its commitment to sustainable development and climate action in the garment sector. The association noted several ongoing initiatives, including energy efficiency programs, renewable energy adoption, circularity projects, and the creation of an ESG data platform, all aimed at building a greener and more sustainable industry.
During group discussions, participants identified challenges such as policy gaps and financing constraints, and explored solutions for achieving integrated climate targets and scaling up renewable energy adoption.
