China’s Kaixi Group has announced plans to invest an additional US $ 40 million to establish an intimate apparel and accessories manufacturing facility at the Bepza Economic Zone (Bepza EZ) in Mirsharai, Chattogram. The new factory is expected to produce 18 million pairs of lingerie and undergarments, along with 20 million pairs of bra foam and cups annually, creating employment opportunities for approximately 3,003 Bangladeshi workers.
The investment agreement was signed at the Bepza Complex in Dhaka, with Xiao Hongxi, chairman of Kaixi Garments Bangladesh Limited—a subsidiary of Kaixi Group—and Md Ashraful Kabir, a member for investment promotion at Bepza, participating in the ceremony. Maj Gen Abul Kalam Mohammad Ziaur Rahman, executive chairman of Bepza, attended the signing and praised Kaixi Group’s decision to expand its operations just 14 months after starting its initial project, highlighting the growing confidence of foreign investors in Bepza and its zones.
During the event, Xiao Hongxi acknowledged operational challenges faced by the company, particularly the lack of nearby worker housing, which necessitates transporting employees from distant locations and sometimes delays their arrival. Despite these hurdles, he reaffirmed Kaixi Group’s long-term commitment to Bangladesh and to its operations within Bepza EZ.
Kaixi Group’s first project at Bepza EZ was approved in November 2022 with an investment of approximately US $ 60.85 million, and commercial production began in June 2024. Currently, this facility employs around 3,700 workers. Together, the two factories, one in Dhaka Export Processing Zone (EPZ) and the other in Bepza EZ, provide jobs for roughly 6,000 Bangladeshis.
To date, 45 companies have signed agreements to invest over US $ 1 billion in Bepza EZ, with four already operational. The Bepza EZ stands as the largest initiative undertaken by the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority, reflecting its commitment to fostering industrial growth, generating employment, and increasing export earnings in the country.
