The Mexican Government’s announcement of higher taxes on fabrics and completed clothing items has forced many American merchants to reconsider their sourcing and fulfilment plans.
According to Mexican authorities, the tariffs, which were announced on December 19, are protective measures for the country’s textile industry and are intended to lessen the impact of cheap clothing imports from China.
Tariffs on textiles and finished clothing entering Mexico were raised by 15 per cent and 35 per cent, respectively. The higher levies are defensive measures that also target lower-priced Chinese goods, according to Mexican officials.
E-commerce companies have been utilising Section 321’s de minimis provision, which permits importers to import products from China into Mexico before sending them to the US in order to avoid paying customs charges on shipments worth $800 or less.
