To ensure workers’ rights and improve working conditions, it is necessary to devise a way forward collectively to address the gaps in legal framework and operationalise the labour law, underlined experts recently.
This they maintained at a roundtable titled ‘Operationalising Labour Law and Policy’ organised by the ActionAid Bangladesh in Dhaka.
The Manager of ActionAid Bangladesh Nuzhat Jebin in a keynote presentation said that in recent years the number of female workers in the readymade garment sector has declined from 60 per cent to 46.18 per cent as has been found according to a survey carried out by the Bureau of Statistics (BBS) in 2019.
The falling trend of women workers has been attributed to a number of reasons including increasing use of technology, lack of skills of women workers compared to male counterparts, increasing interest of men for salary rise, social inequalities and due to the labour-intensive nature of the sector.
President of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque also took part in the discussion amongst others.
