In a move to bring the much-criticized trade union law more in line with international standards, members of 30 independent and government based labour unions and labour advocacy group met to discuss the alterations they wish for in the law. Articles that were discussed were, one that demands unions to be supported by 20 per cent of a workplace before forming a union or opening a union chapter, one that does not allow union formation at workplaces with less than 27 employees, and many others that place penalties, including jail time, for holding strikes unsanctioned by the Government. The group has also demanded the law’s name to be changed from ‘Law of Unions of Enterprises’ to the ‘Law of Industrial Relations’. A thousand people are said to demonstrate at the National Assembly if the suggested changes are not discussed by the Government.
