Spinnova, a Finnish fiber maker, and Portuguese company Tearfil have announced a partnership to scale up yarn production through research and development (R&D) efforts. Tearfil will operate an R&D yarn-spinning line at its facilities in Guimarães, Portugal, dedicated to product development. Spinnova will utilise a portion of the line capacity for its own product development activities. The collaboration aims to explore the use of Spinnova’s fiber in commercial-scale yarn production and enhance collaboration with industry partners.
By establishing the yarn-spinning line in Portugal, Spinnova aims to leverage the country’s extensive industry knowledge and proximity to Europe’s prominent textile industry hub.
This strategic move is expected to improve Spinnova’s access to global textile markets. The technology delivery and installations at Tearfil’s premises are scheduled for the fall of 2023, with the spinning line anticipated to become operational by the end of the year.
This partnership represents a shift from Spinnova’s previous plan to establish an R&D yarn-spinning line in Jyväskylä, Finland. The decision to relocate was made during the feasibility planning phase and discussions with potential partners. The change in location and operational model is expected to reduce capital expenditure and lead to lower operational expenses.
Furthermore, Spinnova will leverage technology from Swiss-based company Rieter for its new spinning mill line. Rieter has already made significant contributions to yarn development for Spinnova blends, employing various spinning techniques
