The most sought-after segment at the GTE, the garment sewing technology and related systems has always set the bar for itself a level above, year after year. This year too, sewing retains the centre-stage at the fair with presence from technology providers from more number of countries than before, covering ever increasing range of produce merchandise, introducing technology to increase productivity while maintaining consistency, addressing specialized needs still flexible enough in sync with fashion change and last but not the least efficient but energy saver. Along with sewing machines, the fair offers many solutions of fusing in pre-sewing segment and finishing in post-sewing to complete the cycle of production.
A trend to watch out for at the fair would be the mix of futuristic technology with shop floor level solutions. While seam welding will showcase the alternate futuristic way of joining fabric, innovative feed system will address the day-to-day problem of puckering.

Vibemac, the Italian company specializing in the manufacture of innovative industrial sewing machines for making high-quality jeans and casual trousers claims that 50% of the apparel manufacturing industry in India and Bangladesh is using their machines for manufacturing denim jeans. Today, the company takes pride in its latest and most productive of loop setting, pocket setting and automatic embroidery units, all of which are popular for their simple and clean operations. Another key feature of Vibemac machines, besides their sturdiness is offering the flexibility of operations which give the fashion-driven industry multiple options in the same machine.
India is an important market for Vibemac and the company has installations at around 250 companies including industry leaders like Shahi Exports, Arvind Mills, FFI Jeans, Gokaldas Exports, Gokaldas Images, Woodland, Bhaskar Denim, Ambattur Clothing and Raymond to name a few. Catering to various levels of manufacturers, the installations vary from one unit to more than 300 machines at one factory, the total installation in India of Vibemac machines is around 2500 units. “There are some companies in India which have been using our machines for more than 32 years,” says a proud Enrico Guerreschi, Vibemac Sales Director for the worldwide market. Bangalore is their biggest market, followed by Mumbai and Gujarat.
With so much goodwill in the market, Vibemac will be present at the GTE to meet old customers and develop new ones with their famous 2516V4 DCT automatic back pocket setter with the unique double colour technology (DCT), 2261 H 3 needles Chainstitch feed-off-the-arm lap felling unit, 3022 WB 406 series automatic waist band unit and the 4650 EV8R/4650 EV7PR automatic loop setter unit. “The Feed-off the machines from Vibemac are the best and fastest in their class. Other machines can only produce around 115 inseams in an hour but our machines right here can easily produce 300 inseams in an hour, so the difference is very high,” says Enrico. “Apart from the basic technologies like servo motor and pneumatic system, the one which makes the feed off the arm machine fast is the fabric sensors present in it which monitors the thickness of the seam continuously and vary the air pressure accordingly, sewing an inseam in a single go,” adds Enrico.
At the show, Vibemac will present its unique V100H double head pocket creaser which is designed to allow quick change of jigs. It works with new folders to crease even the pockets of irregular shapes independently. Another advanced machine, the 1010V4DCS, back pocket decorative unit has an unloader and stacker which allows one operator to easily run 2 machines at the same time, thereby increasing the productivity by 25%. For J-stitch, Vibemac offers 1010V4F1 in double colour technology, this machine stitches around 300 Js per hour without depending on operator skills.[/tab]

Kansai Special, a famous brand from the stable of Morimoto Manufacturing of Japan, the worldwide leader in multi-needle chainstitch machines, has satisfied clients in more than 88 countries. “Since our establishment in 1927, we have been focusing on double chainstitch machines and hence have been able to provide high-quality products that quickly respond to the world’s needs,” says Hideo Koge, Director, Kansai Special.
Over the years the company has widened its offerings to the apparel industry by covering all classes of chainstitch and decorative stitch machines. Today Kansai is the most competitively priced sewing machine manufacturer when compared to other Japanese brands. “We have automated our production facilities in Japan, due to which the workforce has reduced drastically and now only 5 people are required to monitor the assembly floor area of 50,000 sq. feet. This is the reason Kansai still is competitively priced,” says Koge. Kansai also has a factory in Shanghai to produce overlock machines, but still the machines manufactured in China are checked for quality in the Japanese facilities.
Also from HCA, machines from Hikari, PFAFF and Duke
HCA on its booth would also display a variety of direct drive machines from Hikari including automated machines for pocket welting, placket making, pattern sewing and digital printing from Duke. Also seen at their booth would be smaller and economical single colour embroidery machines from Pfaff and the same from SWF in multi-colour.
Along with all the above innovations, HCA will also display machines produced by itself in India (with Japanese parts).
At the GTE show, Kansai would be showcasing its machines under 5 broad product categories, i.e. multi-needle, double chainstitch, overlock, coverstitch and decorative stitch machines through the booth of their oldest agent in India, HCA. “We work very closely with Kansai to bring the most flexible and productive solutions best suited for the Indian market,” comments Anil Anand of HCA.
One of Kansai’s key developments, an improved version of the Kansai DLR 1508, i.e. the DLR 1509, with six needles for operations like lap seaming, attaching waistbands and line tapes, would be the highlights of the exhibition. The machine with a unique rear puller and horizontal looper movement mechanism has the flexibility and sturdiness to sew medium to heavy weight materials. Similar upgradation would be done with the Kansai double needle chainstitch machine LX 5802 LR, by adding left and right side gauges for widening its scope of operations. [/tab]

The only Indian sewing machine manufacturer which has given many sewing machines giants a run for their money, when talking about the Indian domestic market, is USHA International. Established in 1940, USHA has always pursued for technical excellence, customer satisfaction and eco-friendly technologies. The focus would be on the direct drive single needle lockstitch 8900D-Y sewing machines and the USHA 8 straight knife cloth cutting machine. The other machines on display will be the computer-controlled bar tack machine 1900 T-JH and computer-controlled button sewing machine 1903T-K. “The domestic market is the next big thing for the Indian apparel manufacturing sector and to take it to the next level high-end automations are necessary,” avers Sudhakar Varma, AGM, USHA International.
The 8900D-Y computerized single needle lockstitch machines with a 400-watt direct-drive servo motor not only guarantees reduced energy consumption but also ensures the quality of the stitch with the help of features like smooth knee lifting device, auto lubrication, auto lifter and thread wiping device, all at the speed of 5599 SPM. Along with the direct-drive lockstitcher, the USHA 1900T-JH bar tack machine and USHA 1903T-K computer controlled button sewing machine will be on display.
USHA International has also ventured into manufacturing of basic cutting room equipment like straight knife cutters and will be showcasing the USHA-8 straight knife cutter, equipped with features like automatic knife grinding device and auto lubrication; the cutter can easily handle denim, silk, cotton and knit. It is fitted with a 2850 RPM 750-watt motor with cutting width of 110/160 mm.[/tab]

Present at the GTE with the ZJ 1900B series of computer controlled bartacking machines, ZJ 9701 high speed direct drive lockstitcher and the popular ZJ 700 overlock series, Zoje is bound to make its presence felt in the Indian apparel manufacturing sector. “Zoje has in-house production facilities to manufacture all the electronic control boxes attached to its computer controlled sewing machines, through one of its sister concerns, unlike other machine manufacturers. Hence, we are able to provide a three-year guarantee for our electronic control boxes attached to any machine,” comments Roben.
The ZJ 1900B bartacking series of sewing machines, sewing at the high speed of 300 RPM, are equipped with newly developed needle grasping mechanism, which prevent the thread from slipping off the needle eyelet at the beginning of sewing and tangling on the wrong side of the material. The machine comes in a total of 5 variants for handling fabric ranging from light to heavy weight to knits. Among the wide gamut displayed by Pfaff for sewing shirts, trousers, jackets and technical textiles, the Plusline machines for sewing shirts – Pfaff 2481 and 2483, the Pfaff 8312 ultrasonic welding machine, the Pfaff 3801 for pre-gathering sleeves and bridle-taping armholes and the Pfaff 3586 for sewing darts and waistband pleats on trousers, skirts and blouses, would be under the spotlight.
The sensor-controlled Plusline machines recognize the edge and set a precise corner stitch automatically. By improving a sewing operator’s handling with programmed operating cycles and automatic sewing stops after every direction change while sewing, the machines from the Plusline generation guarantee the highest amount of quality and output. The Pfaff 2481 is for controlled top-stitching of small parts such as collars, cuffs, flaps, shoulder flaps, sleeve clasps etc., while the Pfaff 2483 is for attaching small parts (e.g. breast pockets) on semi-finished cuttings.

Part of Sara Group, a diverse company with interest in textiles, minerals and infrastructure, Magnum Resources premiers offerings from Miller Weldmaster Corporation, USA, a hot wedge welding machine. The company well known for its expertise in the field of heat-sealing technology caters to the industrial fabric and thermoplastic industries. The most famous product from Miller is the Weldmaster T3 ‘extreme seam’ hot wedge welding machine, with a welding speed of up to 10 m per minute. The Stain Free series would comprise of W1600P cylinder bed interlock machines and W1500P flatbed interlock series, all equipped with the Oil Barrier Technology from Pegasus, along with the M700 series of over-edging machines with improved over-edgers. The machines under the Zebra Stitch category would include machines the W(T)500P series variable top feed flatbed type, W(T)600P series variable top feed cylinder bed type and FW600 feed-of-the-arm cylinder bed type, all with specifically developed for performing the decorative and value add Zebra Stitch.
Brother, the pioneer in lockstitch sewing machines for the apparel industry, would display the BAS-300 series pattern sewing machine and the S-6200DD direct drive lockstitcher. Brother being the pioneers in direct drive technology has launched the S-6200DD as a budget model for the Indian customers going towards direct drive technology. The machine being direct-drive reduces the energy consumptions by 50% and with the enhanced motor output; the needle penetration becomes accurate, smooth and easier in case of heavy sewing materials. Also showcased would be the BAS-300G direct drive programmable lockstitch electronic pattern sewer with cylinder bed and 130 X 60 mm sewing area, the machine cycle time has been reduced by 19% compared to the previous models due to the unique direct drive system of the machine. Sewing at the speed of 2700 stitches/minute with thread trimmer and thread wiper functions, the machines have the lowest power consumption in its class.[/tab]

The new motor improves the sewing efficiency by 20% and the energy saving amount’s for a factor of 70%; also the motor provides a wider range of energy output than compared to any clutch motor. In a live demonstration at Gemsy’s stall, the motor generated a high output of 800W. “Our motor that is just 10% costlier than a clutch motor, alternates its energy consumption in accordance with the type of fabric being sewn, i.e. heavy, medium or light weight,” explains Justin. A live demonstration will be a part of the display, to illustrate the reduction in energy consumption of sewing machines, while running. The motor comes in four variants with maximum output of 400W, 550W, 600W and 750W. All the sewing machines from Gemsy are already built in with this motor and it is very easy and cost-effective to repair in case of breakdown.
Another innovation to watch out for is the GEM8900D-Y direct drive auto-lubrication round knife high speed lockstitch sewing machine with a stainless steel flatbed. The lockstitcher comes with an optional auto-cutter which eliminates the task of manual cutting after every stitch, not only optimising the sewing process but also enhancing the quality and efficiency. The new concept machines are available in widths of 60, 100 and 140 cm, and each width is produced in three versions – EXIT, with posterior exit belt; RETURN, with a special return belt bringing pieces to the operator in front of machine; and PILER, equipped with an automatically stacker available with up to 4 lanes. Among its ranges, the most popular X 600SH shirt-fusing machine is also described as a ‘true revolution’ as this system can process shirt collars and cuffs without modification because pieces do not pass through heated rolls.
Nissin Machinery of Singapore would showcase its world class pressing, fusing and finishing equipment. Among the wide gamut put on display with live demonstrations for all, would be the NT-750 pneumatic cuff turning machine, NT-630V twin head armhole pressing & fusing machine, NT-104A pneumatic bundle clamp with table stand, NT-516V bottom hem pressing & fusing machine, NT-756 pneumatic collar pressing machine and the NF-536V shoulder & back yoke fusing machine. Nissin maintains an extensive line-up of high-precision measurement devices for data gathering and quality evaluation, including CNC image measurement systems and CNC 3D measurement devices, which are not affected by human factors, ensuring high quality products every time.
Loiva would also showcase its all-time favourites the ST-10 button wrapping & knotting machine, ST-12 button feeder attachment and the MJ-3400 single needle lockstitch machines for collars and cuffs in-built with an auto-jig mechanism. Hashima may be a Japanese brand, but it is well tuned with the needs of the Indian market and its price positioning has been done taking into consideration the local demands. With a company policy that says, “The only one than the number one”, the company develops more than 200 kinds of machines like needle detector, fusing press, quilting machine, stacker and hydro adjuster for apparel industrial needs.
“We have acquired more than 90% of the market share in this product segment because of the quality, performance and consistency offered by our machines,” says Khaja Nasiruddin, Country Manager – India, Hashima. Hashima’s technology for fusing and needle detection has been approved by buyers like GAP, Nike and Adidas, and is currently being used in reputed companies like Shahi Exports, Richa Global, Chaudhary Garments and Vandana Textiles.
Hashima would be present at the GTE showcasing its new HP-450M/MS compact press along with the already successfully running HN-770G conveyor type needle detector and the HP-900LF/LFS straight linear fusing press. The compact press with an upper belt wrapping prevention system and a new design frame which reduces heat affect against electric parts ensuring a lengthened life span, is bound to expand Hashima’s reach in the Indian market. Equipped with a rotary strip-off device, the compact press operates at the maximum belt speed of 8.7 metres/minute.
The HN-770G a conveyor type needle detector with digital processing technology from Hashima, is equipped with a digital PC board as opposed to the older models with an analog circuit, enabling reduction of magnetic disturbance and increase in stability. This machine has an increased sensitivity with steps from 10 to 101, so that the best sensitivity can be set for the respective garments. Its low speed mode is a useful function for accessories while its restart function is convenient for the ‘9-point test’ which is usually done before any new operation.
Also showcased would be the HP-900LF/LFS straight linear fusing press with bigger diameter pressure roller for increased pressure balance, fusing quality and durability. With a fusing width of 900 mm, a seamless belt has been adopted to increase the durability of the belt. A puckering prevention roller, the position of which can be easily adjusted to suit any fabric is one of the special features of the fusing press. The VEIT eMotion package is based on 4 elements that includes ‘Energy box’, which contains the central steam conditioning and distribution and helps in minimizing cost. Second is the ‘Machine-specific isolation’ that acts as the key for further savings. Third is an ‘Intelligent Programmable Controller’ that regulates the steam supply, as only the required amount of steam is fed into the system. Lastly, a central remote control unit manages all eMotion machines via WLAN.
Most machines from VEIT Group such as fusing, pressing and finishing require lots of power that actually lead to the development and evolution of the eMotion systems. “We are also looking at helping customer install these eMotion components in Non-VEIT Group products which are of similar products/end uses. We also have a special eMotion Kit which can be retrofitted to most of the VEIT Group products so that customers can start saving energy costs right away,” says the company spokesman.
The company participating at the GTE will take the opportunity to introduce Coolset TFM450 – the most economical and powerful 45 cm table top fusing machine. The machine has uniquely-designed heating elements which will maintain a uniform temperature across the machine’s width. Its digital temperature controller helps the machine to reach up to 180°C with ease. The pressure adjustable front rollers in the machine help in setting up folders so that it can be used effectively for operations like waistband belt loops, sleeve vents, pocket creasing, and waistband folds. The fusing machine comes with the self monitoring systems that will actually help the customers to locate the reasons for stoppage.[/tab]

Macpi already has a strong hold in the Indian sub-continent with many takers for its wide product range, covering all types of solutions for finishing, pressing, fusing, cutting and spreading. Taking the opportunity at the GTE, Macpi would be introducing its world-renowned line of bonding machines, i.e. machines for joining seams without needle or thread. The two innovations would be Macpi 335.32 and 335.48, for edge bending and hemming operations, respectively. Edge bending machine, Macpi 335.32, is for application on shaped fabrics like bra cups etc. The bonding process is done with an upper and lower wheel with sequential gear system and an edge trimmer. The upper wheel is heated with an individual temperature control mechanism, along with a separate pressure controller for the same. At the GTE, the Chinese manufacturer would display its range of direct-drive high speed lockstitch machines, high-speed interlock sewing machines and high-speed over-lock sewing machines.
The SE-8800-D3, among the direct-drive lockstitchers, not only sews at the top speed of 5000 RPM but also ensures the quality of the seam while keeping the noise and vibration levels to the minimum. When compared with ordinary sewing machines, the sewing machine reduces the power consumption by 35%, increases the sewing efficiency by 15% and guarantees the ROI in the time span of two years.
The interlock sewing machines from SEW comes in a total of 4 variants apart from the basic model, for performing the operations of cover seaming, bottom seam folding and elastic lace attachment with edge notcher. Manufacturing automatic and high-end machines, the company has been catering not only to the needs of the apparel manufacturing sector but that of the sewn product industry as a whole, since its inception in 1954. Participation at the GTE is a clear indicator of the company’s increasing share in the Indian market.
At the fair, HAMS is showcasing its MHA-600BB automatic shoulder-strap threading & sewing machine, MHA-700BB strap-end Z & O ring threading & sewing machine, MHA-AD100 airbag sewing machine, MHA-BB200F auto-belter and the MHA-HB200 semi-automatic bottom hemmer. The above products are only a few from the company’s wide variety of machines for manufacturing apparels, automobile upholstery, foundation garments, curtains and bed sheets.
Specifically developed for bra manufacturing are the MHA-600BB automatic shoulder-strap threading and the MHA-700BB strap-end Z & O ring threading sewing machines. The BB200F auto-belter performs the operation of cutting, folding and sewing of a belt loop with ease, delivering high quality and optimum productivity. The Electronic Bar-tack machine head from Brother allows the machine to make numerous types of sewing patterns. Adoption of the manifold electromagnetic valve and cylinder prevents the machine from marking noise and getting oil-stained. The HB200 bottom hemmer, equipped with the head of Brother SC-7760 single needle cylinder bed lockstitcher with needle feed, operating at the speed of 4000 RPM requires minimal human intervention for completion of the hemming operation.
