The 5th annual Dog Carnival in Lagos, Nigeria, soared to new heights in pet fashion, occurring on 9th and 10th December 2023. Dog owners flaunted their pets in indigenous outfits at the canine festival, aiming to spotlight the nation’s cultural diversity while promoting responsible pet ownership.
Jackie Idimogu, the festival’s primary organiser, highlighted the 2023 festival as a platform for fostering national unity. In the aftermath of Nigeria’s contentious presidential election, which revealed ethnic divisions in voting patterns, the event aimed to emphasise the nation’s unity despite its diverse tribes and cultures. Idimogu emphasised, “The Lagos Dog Carnival 2023 celebrates the unity of Nigerians, showcasing our varied tribes and cultures, yet highlighting our common unity.”
The festival featured an array of breeds such as Pomeranians, Cane Corsos, and Siberian Huskies, adorned in fashionable attire, marking the festival’s fifth year. Many local fashion brands participated in the outfit creations and customised production. Notably, a Lhasa Apso dressed in traditional Igbo clothing claimed the title of the best-dressed dog.
As the trend of pet fashion gains traction, events like these serve as a catalyst, elevating the profile of pet fashion and accessories in regions where they have previously received less attention. This showcase at canine carnivals plays a significant role in propelling the popularity of pet apparel within communities.
