PUMA has joined forces with Jaipur Rugs on “The Legacy Lives On,” a collaboration that brings India’s rug-making heritage into contemporary sneaker culture. At the centre of the partnership is a reworked edition of the classic PUMA Suede, reimagined through the colour and craft language of Jaipur Rugs.
The design draws directly from Rajasthan’s textile traditions, translating them into a palette of maroon, dusty rose, ochre, and sand. The result is a silhouette that keeps its street-style DNA while carrying visible traces of handcraft — an attempt to bridge two very different worlds of making: mass-market performance footwear and artisan-led, slow-crafted rugs.
Industry watchers see the tie-up as notable precisely because of that contrast. PUMA brings scale and a global sportswear footprint; Jaipur Rugs brings a reputation built on handmade craftsmanship rooted in Rajasthan’s weaving communities. Bringing the two together signals a broader shift — global brands increasingly looking to Indian heritage businesses not just for inspiration, but as active creative collaborators.
The launch also taps into a wider consumer trend: younger buyers gravitating toward products that pair authenticity with contemporary design, rather than heritage cues used purely as decoration. For craft-rooted Indian brands, such collaborations offer a route to international visibility that would be harder to achieve alone; for global labels, they offer a way to plug into local cultural narratives with credibility.
Positioned within PUMA’s broader push into culturally-inspired capsule collections, the sneaker collaboration adds to a growing list of examples — Sabyasachi x The Met being another recent one — of Indian craftsmanship finding new platforms on the global fashion stage, reinterpreted for a contemporary audience without losing its cultural roots.
