Chanel’s recent Métiers d’Art show, which celebrates the skilled craftspeople the company works with, happened in Manchester. It not only showcased the label’s craftsmanship but also ignited a substantial economic upswing for the city. Estimated to have generated £ 8 million directly, with additional significant indirect impacts, the event enhanced Manchester’s profile in the global fashion arena.
Recognised as the UK’s secondary fashion hub due to its hosting of major mass-market players, Manchester experienced a surge in prominence as global celebrities, influencers, and media flocked to the city for the Chanel show, transforming it into a luxury focal point.
Council Leader Bev Craig highlighted the event’s role in solidifying Manchester’s global standing, foreseeing lasting direct and indirect advantages. Victoria Braddock, Marketing Manchester’s MD, projected a long-lasting impact from the show, indicating its substantial influence for years to come.
The event not only brought over 600 guests and staff to Manchester’s hotels but also stimulated local spending during the show. Moreover, the £ 8 million direct impact doesn’t fully encompass the value of positive national and international media coverage, estimated to exceed £ 100 million.
Manchester’s reputation as a fashion hub received a substantial boost, potentially attracting future investments, fostering job growth, and opening new prospects for the region. Additional benefits included cost-free contributions to the city (Chanel covered cleanup and road closure expenses), while 50 Manchester Met fashion students gained invaluable hands-on experience during the event.
