High price of yarn has become a serious issue in Tamil Nadu, a leading textile state. In protest against the same, the industry in Tirupur is going on strike tomorrow.
Tamil Nadu’s leader of the opposition K. Palaniswami has urged the State Government to provide yarn and yarn subsidy to the weavers and take steps to reduce the import duty on cotton.
The former Chief Minister and AIADMK Joint Coordinator Palaniswami also asked the State Government to flush out the hoarding of cotton and yarns in the state.
Citing the increase in yarn prices during the last ten months affecting the textile industry, Palaniswami said the units were not able to accept new orders and also execute their old orders with increased input prices.
He said hoarding and duty hikes on cotton imports are the main reasons for the price hike, which has affected the handloom and power loom units.
According to him, power loom owners are selling their machines so as to sustain themselves.
Raja M. Shanmugham, President, Tiruppur Exporters Association (TEA) said that the members of TEA extend wholehearted support to the collective decision of all the trade associations and labour unions to observe a general strike and hunger strike.
He has also appealed to their members to ensure the success of the protest so as to attract the attention of the Central Government and do the needful for the best interest of the value-added garment sector.
