The UK government has prohibited direct air shipments from Bangladesh. The decision was taken after security assessments of the Dhaka International Airport found that some international security requirements were not being met. This move will certainly affect many exporters across most industries in the country, including textiles.
In this regard, Mohammed Nasir, Vice-President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), while speaking to a local daily, said, “Air shipments are made mainly for two reasons — if shipments are delayed or if there is an urgency from the buyers,”

Fazlul Hoque, former president of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), also commented that UK’s move will affect the country’s image.
There were much hue and cry over the issue among local exporters, who were worried about its possible impact over country’s foreign trade activities, while in a more broader sense about the country’s tarnished image abroad.
Bangladesh has been a prime exporter of apparel for the European Union, of which UK happens to be the second largest destination. According to BGMEA statistics, Bangladesh fetched $3.23 billion from garment exports to the UK in the 2015 calendar year.
