Telangana Government has announced a loan waiver scheme for the distressed handloom weaver community in the state. The decision is expected to benefit around 2,467 handloom Telangana weavers.
The State Government has earmarked an amount of Rs. 15 crores to implement the Handloom Weavers Loan Waiver Scheme, informed Textile Minister K.T. Rama Rao while making a statement in the Assembly last week.
The loans availed by handloom weavers from January 2014 to March 2017 up to a maximum of Rs. 1 lakh as working capital from nationalised banks and District Cooperative Central Banks (DCCBs) for the production of handloom products would get the benefit of the latest scheme announced by the Government.
“In view of problems being faced by these weavers while repaying the loan, out of 2,467 handloom weavers, 205 who have already repaid the loans will also get the benefit under the loan waiver scheme” added Rama Rao.
The weavers have been facing low wage issue as they do not get reasonable prices for their goods in the market. As a result, the weavers could not repay the loans taken from banks and became defaulters.
