Sudanese textile industry is all set for a revival! Thanks to the efforts by Sudanese Chambers of Industrial Association that has come up with a plan to export about 50%-60% of cotton yarns in addition to rehabilitating unions and factories to produce high quality yarn, and enter global competition.
Textile business has been an ancient trade in Sudan that pertains to Sudanese cotton production wherein the production of cotton in huge quantities and high standards were the basic motivators, and led to the growth of the textile industry in Sudan. The sector has passed through several revival periods and Sudan has exported cotton yarns to many states such as Iraq, Egypt, Switzerland and Korea amongst others, along with cotton fabrics. But there are some road-blocks that the Sudanese textile industry has faced and is currently facing.

At a workshop, ‘Sudanese Textile Industry and its role in the Economy’, organized by SCIA and Sudan Foundation, Al Fateh Abbas Al Qureshi, Director of the Sudanese Chambers of Industrial Association (SCIA), revealed, “The Sudanese textile industry has suffered and still does, from the challenges and obstacles it has been facing, but they are beginning to recede. Innumerable reasons have been accorded for the decline in Sudanese Textile industry yet the most pertinent are the economical sanctions placed on the country and its effects on productive and economical sectors. There are problems such as not keeping up with new scientific technical development, launching new inventions and promoting productivity processes at regional and international levels, methods of funding and marketing, and establishing regional economic fronts in the region.”
