Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged Brazil to import readymade garments directly from Bangladesh on Monday.
“RMG goods from Bangladesh are exported to Brazil on a limited scale through third parties. It will be more affordable for Brazil if the country directly imports RMG items from Bangladesh,” the premier said when a delegation of Brazil led by its foreign minister, Mauro Vieira, paid a courtesy call to her at her office.
PM’s Speech Writer M Nazrul Islam briefed the media after the meeting.
Sheikh Hasina emphasised the importance of maintaining a balance in commerce between Bangladesh and Brazil, pointing out that it is heavily skewed in favour of Brazil.
She went on to say that Brazil can buy more goods from Bangladesh, such as jute, jute goods, and leather items, to maintain the trade balance between both countries.
The Prime Minister said Bangladesh mainly imports sugar, soybean oil and cotton from Brazil.
“There are huge opportunities to increase bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Brazil,” she said.
Additionally, Sheikh Hasina has emphasised the importance of improving Bangladesh’s and Brazil’s bilateral ties.
