Bangladesh garment industry is going through some tough times thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, garment makers in Bangladesh are apprehensive the much-needed recovery may have to wait longer as a second wave of the pandemic is building up in the West.
What’s more, their expectations that orders would pick up before the festival season, failed to materialise either.
According to a Reuters report, which quoted prominent garment manufacturer and industry leader Siddiqur Rahman, orders have failed to look-up even before Christmas.
Siddiqur further added that clients demanding price cuts to as much as 15 per cent is making recovery even more difficult.
A second wave could further delay the recovery, fears Shahidullah Azim, a supplier to European and North American retailers, who reportedly had to reduce 20 per cent of his workforce when COVID-19 struck first.
Now with reports of vast swathes of Europe and USA under the grip of second wave of the pandemic, global buyers and retailers are reportedly playing safe and refraining from placing orders.
Many are even demanding significant price cut while others are delaying their buying decision, as per industry leaders.
