
Salman F. Rahman, the Prime Minister’s advisor on business and investments, stated following a bilateral meeting between the two countries on Monday (22nd April) that Qatar is keen to establish a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Bangladesh.
“State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu proposed the FTA during the meeting. The Qatari delegation has expressed interest in this regard,” Salman briefed the media after the meeting at the Le Meridien Hotel in Dhaka.
At the meeting, Salman F Rahman led the Bangladesh side and Sheikh Mohmmed bin Hamad Al Thani, Minister of Commerce and Industry of Qatar, led the Qatar side. Qatar Amir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani arrived in Dhaka on a two-day official visit on Monday. Six agreements between both countries are anticipated to be signed during his visit.
The agreements include the following: the transfer of convicted individuals, the creation of a combined business council, mutual investment development and protection, maritime transit, cooperation in legal matters, avoidance of double taxation and tax evasion. In addition to this, five memorandums of understanding (MoUs) are anticipated to be signed during the visit, covering topics such as collaboration in diplomatic training, higher education and scientific research, and the labour force.
