In the recently held general election, a significant number of influential figures from Bangladesh’s foremost industrial sector, particularly the readymade garment (RMG) industry, have reportedly secured seats as Members of Parliament (MPs).
Notable personalities among them include Salman F Rahman, Tipu Munshi, Md Shahriar Alam, AK Azad, Abdus Salam Murshedy, Abdus Salam, Abdul Momin Mandal, Mohammad Khosru Chowdhury, and several others.
Media reports maintained this adding Salman F Rahman, the vice-chairman of Beximco Group, emerged victorious as the Awami League candidate from Dhaka-1 (Dohar and Nawabganj) constituency while former Commerce Minister and Managing Director of Sepal Group, Tipu Munshi, secured election as the Awami League candidate from Rangpur-4 (Pirgacha and Kaunia) constituency.
Md Shahriar Alam, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in the previous parliament and founder of Renaissance Group, clinched victory in the Rajshahi-6 (Bagha and Charghat) seat even as AK Azad, the founder of Ha-meem Group, gained attention and won as an independent candidate from the Faridpur-3 (Sadar) constituency.
Mohammad Khosru Chowdhury, the chairman of Nipa Group and director of BGMEA, succeeded as an independent candidate in the Dhaka-18 (DNCC part and Airport) seat while founding chairman of Well Group, Abdus Salam, secured victory as an independent candidate from Chittagong-8 (Chandgaon and Boalkhali) constituency.
Anisul Islam Mahmud, the Chairman of Shasha Denims and Co-Chairman of Jatiya Party, was elected from Chittagong-5 (Hathazari) constituency while former BGMEA president and Managing Director of Envoy Group, Abdus Salam Murshedy, became an MP as the Awami League candidate from Khulna-4 (Rupsha, Dighalia, Terkhada) constituency.
AKM Salim Osman, the President of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and Managing Director of Wisdom Apparels Limited, secured election from Jatiya Party in Narayanganj-5 (Sadar, Bandar, and part of NCC) constituency even as Abdul Momin Mondol, the managing director of Mandal Group, won from Sirajganj-5 (Belkuchi and Chauhali) constituency.
In addition, Fayzur Rahman Badal, the managing director of Tusuka Group, was elected from Brahmanbaria-5, Choyon Islam of Sparrow Group from Sirajganj-6, Mujibor Rahman of Smart Group from Chittagong-16, and Dewan Zahid Ahmed Tulu of Axis Knitwear from Manikganj-2 constituency secured victory.
