Prahlad Rai Agarwala, Executive Chairman of Kolkata-based leading company Rupa & Company,has been awarded Padma Shri by the Indian Government.
Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award of India.
With a turnover of more than Rs. 1,200 crore, Rupa & Company is amongst the largest knitwear brands in India, which produce innerwear, casualwear, sleepwear and thermalwear for men, women and kids.
In the last few years, only a very few stalwarts of the Indian textile and apparel industry, like Dr. A Sakthivel of Poppys Knitwear and SP Oswal of Vardhman Group, have been honoured with prestigious Padma awards.
“This recognition has an unparalleled value in terms of respect and acknowledgement of immense positive impact the Chairman, his vision and his work has had on Indian society at large. From taking the zest of entrepreneurship to another level to generating innumerable employment opportunities, he has always led by example,” the company said.
This year, on the list of 128 Padma award winners, there were nine from trade and industry. Notably, N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons, Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google and Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft were also honoured with Padma Bhushan this year.
