The Commerce Minister of Bangladesh has sought support from the global community to continue trade-related international support measures, including preferential market access for Bangladesh for a certain period to help the country deal with the transition challenges.
Tipu Munshi, reportedly, made this request at the virtual launching ceremony of joint policy note on ‘The Role of Trade in Developing Countries’ Road to Recovery’ recently, being prepared by the World Bank Group and World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Underlining that after graduation from least developed country to a developing nation (in 2026) Bangladesh would lose most of the special facilities in the global market and the sudden withdrawal of trade-related support measures would create some challenges for the country, the Commerce Minister called upon the international community to extend trade-related ISMs for certain time period beyond the graduation so that Bangladesh could gradually adjust with
