The employees of the Bangladesh Liaison Office of UK-based retailer Debenhams, laid off by the retailer, have demanded full payment of salary and other monetary benefits owed to them by it, keeping in with the country’s (Bangladesh’s) labour laws.
According to media reports, Debenhams Bangladesh Employees Union (DBEU), in a press conference titled ‘Illegal Dismissal and Fair Pay’ held in capital Dhaka further alleged that the London-based multinational retailer was committing fraud by illegally re-running the business through third parties.
According to the president of DBEU, Bahauddin Mohammed Ataullah, the retailer reportedly owes around US $ 1 million in salaries, allowance and other service benefits to the retrenched employees in Bangladesh.
It may be mentioned here that Debenhams in April this year terminated 69 staff members from its Bangladesh Liaison Office citing financial constraints on account of COVID-19 pandemic.
“…. The organisation is ignoring rules of the existing regulatory body of the country,” reportedly stated the DBEU president.
