In the preceding calendar year (2023), knitwear items emerged as the primary contributor to Bangladesh’s total export earnings, constituting over 47 per cent and securing its position as the leading foreign currency earner.
This is as per reports, which added the analysis revealed that out of the total merchandise shipments of US $ 55.78 billion, readymade garment (knit and woven) exports accounted for US $ 47.38 billion, equivalent to 84.98 per cent.
Notably, knitwear items alone generated US $ 26.55 billion, representing 47.60 per cent, while woven garments contributed US $ 24.71 billion, constituting 37.33 per cent.
Comparatively, in 2022, readymade garment exports amounted to US $ 45.70 billion out of the total export earnings of US $ 54.70 billion.
Exporters attribute the success of the knit subsector to robust backward linkages, its ability to ensure rapid product delivery, and government policy support.
Policies such as cash incentives and utility assistance have facilitated investments in the knitwear subsector, covering yarn, fabric, and dyeing segments.
Knitwear exporters highlight the impact of changing fashion trends and buyers’ preferences for swift product delivery, factors that have driven the demand for knit items.
