After witnessing a decent start in January ’22 that saw an increase in both its apparel import weights and values, Japan has experienced a fall in the weight of apparel imports during H1 ’22 as compared to the same period of 2021.
On one hand, garment shipment weights have reduced, while values, on the other hand, have increased majorly due to weaker yen.
As per the official data, the apparel imports of Japan valued US $ 9.86 billion, growing by 13.89 per cent on Y-o-Y basis, while weights of the imports declined by 0.91 per cent to 2.88 billion kg.
This data shows that Japanese buyers are still buying cautiously even in 2022 – a trend that has continued in the country since 2019.
China, India and Vietnam declined in weight-wise exports to Japan, while Bangladesh and Sri Lanka noted an increase both in its shipment’s values and weight.
China contributed US $ 5.46 billion (up 11.80 per cent on Y-o-Y basis) in total apparel import values of Japan, which is nearly 55.37 per cent of the shipment value of Japan. The share of China was 59 per cent in the import values during January ’22.
The second top importing destination was Vietnam that grew by 11 per cent in its shipment on Y-o-Y basis to US $ 1.47 billion.
Imports from Bangladesh valued US $ 578.68 million, up 31.30 per cent in H1 ’22, while weight-wise it upped by 8.53 per cent. India contributed US $ 135.21 million in Japanese apparel imports during H1 ’21.
