The United States’ import taxes directly threaten entire industries, according to the International Apparel Federation (IAF). The federation stated that the duties endanger the livelihoods of innumerable workers and business owners in the apparel sector and that there is a risk of destabilising economies.
The IAF is happy that a significant portion of the import duties have been placed on hold. But it cautioned that the confusion that has been created cannot be stopped. Chains around the world are still getting over the pandemic, the Red Sea disaster, and the drop in consumer confidence. Trade policy’s unpredictability deters investment and increases market volatility, which hinders the recovery of trust. As a result, the IAF demanded that efforts be made to create a trade environment that is steady and predictable.
The federation further stated that other nations may experience an increase as a result of the US-imposed import taxes on China. Many nations that export apparel lack the local purchasing power necessary to dramatically boost US imports. Therefore, calling for significant changes to the trade balance is irrational and unrealistic. Trump wants to make sure that the trade balance between the United States and many other nations is more balanced by using import taxes. According to the IAF, hefty tariffs are also unlikely to result in a significant repatriation of apparel production to the US.
