Union Textiles Minister of India, Smriti Irani has said that the Government can impose Dumping Duty on fabric import from China as it is working on a policy to stem the flow of cheap clothes into the Indian market. Additionally, during her visit to Bhiwandi (Maharashtra) – the city which has 7 lakh powerlooms, Smriti Irani also met the powerloom workers and owners, understood their issues and assured them of best possible solution for their problems.
It may be noted that duty on imported Chinese fabrics is an issue which has time and again been raised by many textile councils… Man-made fabric (MMF) segment is highly affected due the import of fabric from China. Industry experts claims that Chinese fabrics in India is pegged at about 7 per cent of the total volume of fabrics manufactured in India. Apart from this the fabric is imported by undervaluing the prices in the range of Rs. 7-8 per metre.

Duraisamy, Immediate Past Chairman, Powerloom Development & Export Promotion Council, (PDEXCIL) is of the opinion that this duty is must in regards to MMF. “Chinese fabric is coming through Bangladesh and other ways where it is using various advantages, Government must protect interest of Indian manufacturers of MMF,” he said.
