India is celebrating National Handloom Day. The Government has been celebrating National Handloom Day, with the first celebration being held on 7th August, 2015. The date was specifically chosen as an ode to the Swadeshi Movement which was launched on 7th August, 1905 and had encouraged indigenous industries and in particular handloom weavers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join the National Handloom Day celebrations at Delhi. The PM said that “This is an occasion to reiterate our commitment towards popularising local textiles and handlooms in the spirit of being ‘Vocal For Local.’”
The programme will be attended by over 3000 handloom and khadi weavers, artisans and stakeholders from the textile and MSME sectors. It will bring together handloom clusters across India, NIFT campuses, Weaver Service Centres, Indian Institute of Handloom Technology campuses, National Handloom Development Corporation, Handloom Export Promotion Council, KVIC institutions and various State Handloom Departments.
Apart from this there are various programmes which are being organised across India.
It is worth mentioning here that Ministry of Textiles is implementing many schemes to promote the handloom and handicraft sector and welfare of weavers/artisans across the country like National Handloom Development Programme; Raw Material Supply Scheme; National Handicraft Development Programme; Comprehensive Handicrafts Cluster Development Scheme.
