After the strong and continuous reaction of the textile and apparel industry, Ministry of Textiles (MoT) will approach the GST secretariat seeking restoration of the rate to 5 per cent.
There are reports that the Textiles Ministry is opposed to the rate hike and feels that the industry needs relief. Any decision which adds to their troubles needs to be flagged.
“Our communication to the GST secretariat is very clear – maintain status quo on rates and make any change only after a detailed discussion with the ministry and the industry stakeholders,” said an official of MoT.
It is worth mentioning here that recently a large delegation of industry had meetings with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of State for Textiles Darshana Jardosh in this regard. Team CMAI also met KN Balagopal, Finance Minister, Kerala.
Industry stakeholders across the India are agitating against the GST hike and demanding to maintain the status quo.
Recently in its last meeting, the GST Council took the decision to correct the inverted tax structure by raising GST from 5 per cent to 12 per cent for several textiles and apparel items (other than fibre and yarn)from 1 January 2022.
