The Bangladesh’s exports rose by only 1.5 per cent during July-December 2014, as opposed to 18 per cent during July-December 2013. The country also fell short of its revenue collection target by 10 per cent. Further, researchers predict the revenue deficit will be over BDT 25,000 crore by the end of current financial year. According to Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), apparel production has declined by 30 per cent. The plunge in exports will impact employment and create a significant deficit in revenue collection, derailing the Government’s development planning and expenditure, investment and GDP growth.
