Bangladesh and Germany have recently entered into two technical cooperation agreements, one of which is dedicated to improving working conditions in the tannery sector.
This initiative, known as the ‘Good Working Conditions in Tanneries (GOTAN)’ project, aims to encourage stricter adherence to occupational health and safety regulations in specific regions of Bangladesh.
The project falls under the supervision of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE), operating within the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE).
It is set to receive funding of up to € 4 million, as stated in a press release.
Scheduled for completion by 30th April 2025, the project envisions the establishment of a more robust institutional framework to promote enhanced compliance with safety standards within tanneries.
The formal agreement was signed by Sharifa Khan, representing Bangladesh as the Secretary of the Economic Relations Division (ERD), and Andreas Kuck, the Country Director of GIZ, representing Germany in Bangladesh.
