Demanding better wages and safety measures in garment factories, Garment and Fashion Workers Union protested in Chennai. Many female workers took part in the demonstration.
Meghna Sukumar, Organizing Secretary of the Union said, “The previous GO passed in 2004, when the basic wage was fixed at Rs 2,215 and Rs 1,981 for operators and helpers respectively. This took years to implement after a protracted legal battle. The fate of the revision made in 2014 is now in the hands of the judiciary.”
