Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), a London-based alliance of companies, trade unions and NGOs that promotes respect for workers’ rights around the globe, has launched a programme to support the sustainable development of Leicester’s garment and textile industry. The development follows findings of a report according to which remuneration below the national minimum wage, absence of employment contracts, health and safety breaches practices, and poor enforcement of labour standards were rampant. The programme will offer training and support to suppliers and manufacturers to help them develop management systems to ensure that wages meet legal requirements. The alliance will also work with trade unions, local groups and regional networks to collectively tackle in-work poverty, as well as continuing to promote ethical purchasing practices amongst brands and retailers. The programme will also focus on strong suppliers and factories business relationships.
