
With an aim to avoid congestions at the transhipment ports and promptly cater to the rising demand for apparels in their respective countries, global buyers are, reportedly, looking at taking their goods by air thereby mounting pressure on the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), which is struggling to handle the increased load of cargos containing apparels.
Media reports maintained this while adding the airport is now handling 1.5 times more cargo than its capacity.
Meanwhile speaking to the media, Executive Director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Group Captain AHM Touhid-ul Ahsan, reportedly, maintained that as per airlines capacity, the HSIA was handling 600-700 tonnes of goods in a day, which is about 1.5 times higher than its previous capacity while also adding that the number of cargo flights has also been increased from 15 to 25 now to cater to the same.
“…pressure of apparel goods cargo has increased for the last few weeks,” reportedly, claimed Group Captain AHM Touhid-ul Ahsan, while adding that they are trying their level best to fly all the goods on time with the limited resources even as BGMEA Vice-President Shahidullah Azim, reportedly, maintained that many of the buyers were asking to send their goods through air freight.
