Subsequent to signing its maiden preferential trade agreement with Bhutan — Bangladesh signed a PTA with Bhutan on 6 December 2020 — Bangladesh’s exports to Bhutan are on the rise even as hopes are high that exports to Bhutan could go up significantly on the back of this bilateral trade agreement in the days to come.
Reports maintained this while adding that as per the PTA, Bangladesh is allowed to export around 100 products duty-free to Bhutan with the major beneficiaries in this regard being readymade garments apart from electronic items and processed agricultural goods, while the eligible export-oriented items include baby clothes and clothing accessories, men’s trousers and shorts, jackets and blazers, other than leather and leather products, jute and jute products, etc.
As per data from Bangladesh’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), in the fiscal year of 2020-21, earnings from merchandise shipments to Bhutan stood at US $ 6.89 million, marking a 58.03 per cent rise from that of US $ 4.36 million a year ago even as according to experts, the signing of the trade agreement with Bhutan was a good beginning as the country is negotiating trade pacts with major trading partners in order to ensure duty benefits once Bangladesh graduates from the league of LDC nations in 2026.
