RMG specialists stated that in order to maintain the growth of Bangladesh’s ready-made garment industry, over recruiting of labour force, bond licensing regulation reforms and customs policies must be eased.
RMG experts said this during a seminar and book launch program titled RMG Contemporary Issue and Book Launching conference, which was organised at the ERF Auditorium in the capital city of Dhaka on 19th February.
Speaking regarding the book ‘Bangladesh RMG and Sustainable Development’ author Mohammad Hasan said that only because of the bond licence the garment sector may face challenges whereas the bond licences helped the growth of the garment sector.
Some 1,500 additional bond licenses were issued in addition to the 4,186 already halted bond licenses. He noted that this matter needs to be evaluated in light of the times we live in.
“Some bureaucratic restrictions might be barriers to the development of the garment sector,” he said, adding that policymakers should address these difficulties. We are unable to return with any export cargo due to issues with bureaucracy.”
President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association Faruque Hasan, also a chief guest at the event, said that some policies have to be reviewed for sustainable growth of the sector and bring product diversification.
He added that in order for Bangladesh to meet the US $ 100 billion RMG export goal, it would need to concentrate on producing high-value RMG in addition to ordinary commodities.
Mohammad Hatem, executive president of BKMEA, Abdullah Hil Rakib, director of BGMEA, professor Akhter Hussain of DU, Ferdaus Ara Begum, CEO of BUILD, Mayeesha Mahmud, director, Cotton Group, Ilahi Dad Khan, ex-bureaucrat, among others, spoke in the event.
