
The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has allowed to berth two more container vessels at the port’s jetty to resolve the shipping crisis faced by exporters, including apparel makers, even as 10 container vessels are already loaded at the jetty of the Chittagong Port, which has now been increased to 12, while on the other hand to make room for export products, the CPA has also decided to send about 2,500 empty TEU containers from the port yard and ICDs to the transhipment port.
Media reports maintained this while adding the CPA took decisions in this regard at a recent meeting, which was also attended by the Shipping Agents Association, BGMEA, Bangladesh Container Depots Association, Freight Forwarders Association and other relevant stakeholders.
Meanwhile, CPA Chairman Rear Admiral M. Shahjahan, reportedly, underlined that 10 container vessels currently berth at the port and, it has been decided to provide berthing to 12 container vessels for speedy shipment of export goods while it also decided to send back 2,000-2,500 empty TEU containers to the transhipment port even as he went on to add that amongst the mainline operators, Maersk Line (a Danish international container shipping company), currently transports more goods on the Singapore route and has been requested to increase shipping on the Chittagong-Colombo route.
