The newly built Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) in Chittagong — a container terminal is a facility where cargo containers are transshipped between different transport vehicles, for onward transportation — is all set to start functioning from June this year.
Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority, Rear Admiral M. Shahjahan, reportedly, said this during a recent meeting with a delegation of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
The CPA Chairman at the meeting, in which were also present European Union (EU) to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley and Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh Enrico Nunziata amongst others, reportedly maintained it’ll be possible to handle 145 million TEUs containers in a year after the terminal starts operating.
Currently Chittagong Port has the capacity to contain 50,000 TEUs containers.
Now there are 39,000 TEUs containers at the port. Once the Bay Terminal and Patenga Terminal are opened, it’ll help enhance the capacity of the port, further added the CPA Chairman.
