Underlining that workers will remain in a disciplined environment and can be better supported against infections if the factories are kept open during the week-long lockdown starting 14 April, Youngone Corporation Chairman and CEO Kihak Sung has called upon the Government to allow garment manufacturing units to operate to ‘avoid grave consequences’.
Media reports maintained this while adding that as per Kihak Sung, apparel units had to operate with lots of difficulties and suffer huge financial losses last year even as the
unplanned closure of the factories extending up to 9 weeks made things worse and, reportedly, hurt the country’s image and undermined confidence of some of the major buyers and went on to add that the RMG has not yet recovered from the damaging effects of the first wave of coronavirus and it now has to cope with the second wave while maintaining if factories are kept open, workers will remain in a disciplined environment.
It may be mentioned here that earlier, many other garment manufacturers have also maintained that on account of factory closure the workers will leave for their respective villages which would expose them to the risk of contracting the dreaded virus contrary to if factories are kept open and health and safety protocols followed at workplaces.
Further, garment makers have, reportedly, also stated that in eventuality of factories remaining closed, exporters would fail to make timely shipments and thus might face work order and cancellations, deferred payment and shipments, which they felt may result in the closure of a number of RMG units apart from deterioration in law and order situation and agitation over wage payment ahead of the upcoming Eid.
