The repeated pleas of the garment makers have yielded result as the Bangladesh Government has allowed all export-oriented factories including the garment manufacturing units to resume operations from 1 August, which was the 10th day of the 14-day countrywide lockdown imposed by the Government, on account of the rapidly increasing COVID-19 cases in the country.
According to media reports, as garment and other export-oriented factories resumed operations, workers in thousands have started to arrive to report to their respective workplaces located in the manufacturing hubs of Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, etc., even as there have been reports of laxity in maintaining Covid protocols as workers make arduous journeys to get back to work from villages even as public transport has, reportedly, remained suspended due to the lockdown till 31 July before the Government on the night of 31 July allowed public transport to operate until 12 pm on 1 August to facilitate the return of the workers.
It may be mentioned here that the Cabinet Division on 30 July issued a gazette of notification underlining that all export-oriented factories will remain out of the purview of the ongoing 14-day countrywide lockdown even as the decision came on the back of business leaders calling upon the Government to grant permission to reopen factories.
