Even as new coronavirus cases continue to surge, Bangladesh on Sunday imposed a 7-day countrywide lockdown from today (5 April 2021), in an effort to prevent the spread of the dreaded pandemic.
Media reports maintained this, adding emergency services have been exempted from the lockdown purview even as industrial areas and factories have, reportedly, been allowed to operate albeit after maintaining health and safety measures for their workers and in shifts even as all public transport services including roads, railways, domestic flights and waterways would remain suspended during the week-long lockdown.
Obaidul Quader, the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, had earlier made the announcement while briefing the media even as Shafiqul Islam, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner, reportedly, maintained the police will take tougher decisions with enforcement of the new nationwide lockdown and no one will be allowed to breach rules of the lockdown.
Expressing hopes that if people in general could be restricted within indoors for seven days, the spread of infection could be prevented Obaidul Quader said, “For now, it will be seven days…We will take expert advice and then we shall decide later.”
