The all-important biennial election of the apex garment makers’ body in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), for the term 2021-23, was held successfully on 4 April 2021.
According to media reports, some 325 BGMEA members out of 461 from Chittagong voted at the BGMEA Complex in the port city, while a total of 984 BGMEA Dhaka members out of 1,853 cast their votes (at Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden hotel in the capital) even as the BGMEA election board extended the duration of voting by 3 hours, which allowed voters to cast their vote from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm at 14 booths, as per sources.
Two panels, namely the Forum and the Sammilita Parishad, contested the BGMEA election.
Chairman of the Hannan Group and former Vice-President of BGMEA ABM Shamsuddin led the Forum in the election, while Managing Director of Giant Group and former Vice-President of the trade body Faruque Hassan led Sammilita Parishad.
