In July, container handling for both import and export goods at the Chattogram port experienced a decline compared to the corresponding month last year. The decrease was attributed to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine warfare and the prevailing dollar crisis.
During the month, the port managed 59,592 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEUs) containers for export goods, which was 10,532 TEUs less than the 70,124 TEUs handled in the same month the previous year.
Furthermore, in July of the current year, the port handled 1,13,385 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of import containers, reflecting a decrease of 212 TEUs compared to the 1,13,597 TEUs handled in the corresponding month of 2022.
During the same period, the port managed 6,668 TEUs of empty import containers and 59,352 TEUs of empty export containers.
Nevertheless, when comparing July to June of the current year, there was a notable increase of 9,630 TEUs in the handling of import containers at the port. However, during the same period, the handling of export containers experienced a decline of 15,799 TEUs.
In June, the port handled 103,755 TEUs of import cargo containers and 75,391 TEUs of export cargo containers. Additionally, 4,660 TEUs of empty import containers and 49,711 TEUs of empty export containers were handled during the same month.
Imports increase with relaxed LC restrictions, but exports decline due to reduced orders amid Russia-Ukraine war.
