On Monday night, around 20 garment workers were injured after a truck taking them home from work collided with another truck in Kampong Speu Province of Cambodia. The accident occurred at about 7:15 pm on National Road 3 in Kong Pisei District, which is on the border between Kampong Speu and Takeo Province.
According to the statement issued by the Labour Ministry, 3 of the 16 injured workers are serious. “The local authorities, police and officials from the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) sent the injured to a private clinic and those who were seriously hurt were sent to the Preah Kossamak Hospital in Phnom Penh,” the statement said.

Pav Sina, President of Collective Union of Movement of Workers, said garment workers face traffic accidents on an almost daily basis. “It is a concern that all relevant institutions should pay more attention to,” averred Sina, adding, “I congratulate the NSSF for arranging medical care for these workers, but the Labour Ministry and Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia should be doing more to prevent such accidents.”
He further added that these road accidents are demoralising the workers thereby damaging the productivity.
According to an NSSF report, garment workers were involved in 5,609 traffic accidents in 2016. A total of 103 workers died and 7,446 were injured of which 970 were seriously hurt.
