Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu, the newly elected president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has voiced serious concerns over the potential impact of the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict on Bangladesh’s export sector. He highlighted that the escalating tensions threaten to disrupt global shipping routes, which could further hinder the country’s already strained export logistics.
Babu recalled recent disruptions caused by the Yemeni Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, which led to delays and increased transportation costs for Bangladeshi exports. “We already faced major disruptions from the Houthi attacks, which cost us time and additional charges due to longer shipping routes to avoid danger,” he said.
He warned that the current conflict could cause further shipping line disruptions in the Red Sea and Gulf Peninsula, potentially affecting Bangladesh’s ability to export products smoothly across the globe. “Our efforts to ease port congestion could worsen if shipping lines are hampered,” Babu added.
To address these emerging challenges, Babu announced that BGMEA plans to formally request the Government to allocate additional resources to Chittagong Port. “We will submit a letter urging the mobilisation of more resources to ensure cargo is unloaded promptly and minimise delays,” he stated.
