Bangladesh, the second biggest apparel exporter globally after China, has made a name for itself by producing basic products and in volumes.
However, it was time the garment makers shift their focus towards moving up the value chain and looking towards producing more value-added products.
The President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Faruque Hassan reportedly underlined this while addressing the opening ceremony of a training session on ‘creating high-end fashion heritage materials from Bangladesh’, organised by the garment makers’ body in the capital Dhaka recently.
Emphasising the need for a strategic shift from volume-based production to value addition so as to foster sustainable growth of the industry, Faruque reportedly opined such a transition was very much necessary for the long-term success of the apparel sector of Bangladesh.
The BGMEA chair further reportedly underlined Bangladesh apparel industry had already achieved remarkable progress in terms of apparel exports and it was pertinent that the garment makers now move beyond volume towards value addition even if by focussing on high-value fashion items, the industry will also enhance its competitiveness while also explore new areas of opportunities.
