The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has issued an urgent appeal to international brands and retailers in light of the United States’ unexpected decision to impose a 37 per cent reciprocal tariff on Bangladeshi apparel exports.
In an open letter to global buyers, the association expressed significant concern over this sudden development, labeling it an “unexpectedly challenging situation” that poses a risk to long-established trade relationships. The US is Bangladesh’s largest export market, responsible for nearly 20 per cent of the country’s apparel exports, and the newly implemented tariffs have raised alarm within the industry, creating heightened pressure on costs and uncertainty in sourcing strategies.
The BGMEA acknowledged the strain that this situation has placed on global buyers, recognizing the disruptions to cost structures and supply chain planning. They urged these buyers not to transfer the financial burden to suppliers at this preliminary stage, cautioning that such actions could “exacerbate the stress” experienced throughout the sector.
Md Anwar Hossain, the BGMEA Administrator, stated that the Bangladeshi government is actively engaging with industry stakeholders and US officials to seek a resolution through high-level diplomatic and trade discussions. “The government of Bangladesh has already initiated talks with the US with sincere intent to align our bilateral trade relations,” he remarked.
Reports indicate that several brands and retailers have reached out to their Bangladeshi suppliers to express concerns and explore ways to mitigate the impact of the new tariffs. In response, the BGMEA has called for patience and solidarity, emphasising the significance of maintaining strong partnerships during this crisis.
The letter highlighted the ongoing efforts to enhance the industry’s global competitiveness while ensuring sustainability and social responsibility, particularly for the millions of livelihoods, especially women, that depend on the garment sector.
Furthermore, the BGMEA invited buyers to share their thoughts and suggestions, stressing the necessity for collaborative action. “With solidarity and collaboration, we will be able to address these challenges effectively,” the letter concluded.
