
Bangladesh’s second biggest seaport Mongla Port has made a strong turnaround following increased arrival of ships, which increased several times in recent years even if the monthly arrival of ships, fell below 10 in 2008.
Media reports maintained this adding last year, on average, 71 vessels arrived at Mongla Port every month from what was around 46 vessels/month, showing signs of steady growth in activities.
Meanwhile, as per port users and concerned officials, opening of the Padma Bridge is all set to give a further boost to the port, making it a major gateway for the country’s overseas trade once again.
Speaking to media, member for harbour and marine at the MPA, Commodore Md. Abdul Wadud Tarafder maintained arrivals of ships has increased as the economic growth has fuelled domestic demand.
“…the Chittagong port, in one sense, is saturated in its current capacity,” added Commodore Md. Abdul Wadud Tarafder further while underlining many are looking for an alternative to the Chittagong Port.
