Bangladesh prime port of Chittagong, which is responsible for handling bulk of imports and exports including the all-important apparel shipments, is likely to slip from its current position in the global list of 100 busiest ports even if it is also likely to miss the 30 lakh twenty-foot equivalent unit container (TEU) handling milestone this year too.
This is as per media reports, which added the estimate has been arrived at based on the result of sluggish external trade thanks to inflationary pressure, cold shouldering to LC opening by banks, fears of a prolonged global recession, the continuing the Russia-Ukraine war and dollar shortage.
It may be mentioned here Chittagong Port first achieved the feat of joining the “three-million-club” in 2019 followed by 2021 again even if till November this year, the port’s container handling stands at around 26 lakh TEUs.
